LEGAL NEWS

The Afghanistan War Commission held its first public hearing on July 19, 2024, marking the beginning of a comprehensive investigation into America's longest war. The 16-member bipartisan panel is tasked with determining what went wrong and providing recommendations to ensure leaders don't repeat the same mistakes in future conflicts.
The commission's scope is unprecedented, as it aims to examine the entire span of the war across four presidential administrations, the U.S. military, the State Department, U.S. allies, and many other agencies and organizations.
"The scope and the mandate are very ambitious, but the task is even more significant because it takes place in the immense shadow of all who sacrificed and served"
The commission's work is expected to take two years and will include testimony from war veterans. Its findings and recommendations could have significant implications for current and future U.S. military engagements, veterans programs, as well as provide some measure of closure for the many who have served in America's longest war.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Veteran farmer Jim Hartman found solace in beekeeping, using it to manage his PTSD and service-related injuries. With USDA grants, he established a thriving honey business on his 22-acre property. Hartman now employs fellow veterans and shares his expertise through veteran farming groups.
The VA Portland Health Care System has successfully performed its first osseointegration surgery on a combat veteran, allowing for direct attachment of prosthetic components to the femur. This innovative procedure is helping amputee veterans regain physical independence and mobility.
This research highlights the benefits of massage therapy for veterans dealing with chronic pain, anxiety, and PTSD. The Veterans Health Administration is advocating for better access to this complementary treatment, which has shown promising results in improving veterans' well-being.
PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

The Product: Bottle Breacher transforms once-fired, decommissioned ammunition into unique, handcrafted bottle openers, blending military heritage with everyday functionality.
The Story: Founded by former Navy SEAL Eli Crane and his wife Jen, Bottle Breacher began in 2012 as a garage-based venture in San Diego. The idea sparked when Eli's brother, a Marine Corps helicopter pilot, brought him a simple .50 caliber bottle opener from overseas.
Inspired by the concept, Eli and Jen began crafting their own enhanced versions, eventually catching the attention of investors on the hit TV show Shark Tank.
Bottle Breacher has grown to a major brand employing over 30 people, more than 30% of whom are veterans. The company works closely with many veteran non-profits, with several products having proceeds going directly to these organizations.
Bottle Breacher's core mission goes beyond the bottom line - it's about supporting veteran employment and giving back to the veteran community.
"Our goal is to build the biggest, baddest, made in the USA veteran-owned brand in the world, while giving back to those who have served."
